Dental Crowns & Dental Bridges
Alternative Missing Teeth Solution for Patients in Barrington
A dental bridge is used to replace missing teeth. It can be used as an alternative to implants.
A bridge attaches on each side to the natural teeth. It can be either a fixed bridge which means it remains permanently attached or a removable bridge which can be taken in and out of the mouth. A removable bridge can be taken out of the mouth and cleaned. A fixed bridge is the more stable option but the downside of a fixed bridge is that it is requires more care to keep it clean.
Bridges are constructed from ceramic, porcelain, gold alloys or a combination of these materials.
Dental bridges are sturdy and long-lasting. Occasionally they need to be replaced or re-bonded due to normal wear and tear.
Crowns or caps are a great way to strengthen a weak or damaged tooth. Crowns can restore a tooth to it’s natural looking appearance. Besides the aesthetic aspect, a crown will restore your bite to its proper function. A crown can fix problems with bite and chewing issues.
The material that is used for caps or crowns is either porcelain or porcelain that is bonded to gold. It is colored to appear as natural as your other teeth. It is a long-lasting, if not permanent, solution. A crown can last for decades.
The treatment will generally take two office visits. On the first visit your tooth will be numbed and any decay will be removed from the tooth. An impression will be taken of your tooth to be used to develop your custom crown. A temporary crown will be made to fit your tooth for approximately two weeks while your new crown is being constructed.
On the next visit the temporary crown will be taken off and the tooth cleaned and prepared for the permanent crown. Then the new crown will be placed and you will be checked to make sure that your bite feels natural and there is no discomfort.
