Tooth Extractions in Barrington, RI
Trust Maple Avenue Family Dentistry With Your Oral Health
Unfortunately, sometimes it is necessary for your dentist to perform a tooth extraction. Our Barrington, RI dentists have the experience to do so when needed. Various reasons can contribute to the need for tooth extraction, including tooth decay, impacted teeth, and broken teeth that are beyond repair. In some cases, we perform tooth extractions as a necessary step for orthodontic services. Before we remove a tooth, we always perform an exhaustive examination to determine whether the procedure is required, ensuring we do not remove one unnecessarily. If you are in need of tooth extraction, then you can trust Maple Avenue Family Dentistry to get the job done right.
How We Perform Tooth Extractions
Tooth extractions are common, so the process for removing the tooth is finely tuned. We are experienced enough to perform this procedure without undue pain on your behalf. We use a local anesthetic to numb the area before we begin. While you will not feel pain during the extraction process, you will feel a tremendous amount of pressure. This is from the process of firmly rocking the tooth to remove it from its socket. If you do feel any pain whatsoever, please let us know, and we can take care of it.
Sometimes, we cannot remove the tooth from the socket, or the root is curved. In that case, we must use a process called sectioning. During sectioning, we cut the tooth into sections and remove each one, one at a time. This is a common procedure and nothing to worry about.
What To Expect From The Tooth Extraction Healing Process
After the procedure, it is essential for a blood clot to form where we removed the teeth. To do so, we will have you bite on a gauze pad for 30 minutes. If the area still bleeds, we will have you repeat the process. It is not uncommon for this to take several tries to get the blood clot to form. Once the clot forms, you want to take extreme care not to dislodge or disturb the clot, or you will have to repeat the process.
After we finish a tooth extraction, most patients experience some degree of pain and swelling around the area. This is common and unavoidable. We recommend an ice pack to keep the swelling to a minimum. We will provide you with instructions on pain medication. Please follow those instructions to a “T.” After a few days, you should be ready to resume your normal activities. If you still have heavy bleeding, severe pain, or swelling after two to three days, contact our office immediately.
How We Can Help You Replace Your Extracted Tooth
We can understand why you might be hesitant to remove a tooth. After all, nobody wants missing teeth in their smile. Fortunately, there are several cosmetic dentistry options available to patients. For instance, we can place a dental implant in your jawline to replace the tooth. If that does not sound like the right solution, then fixed bridges might be an adequate route to take. Dentures are another possible solution to the problem. We can talk to you about your options and give you a rundown on which solutions might be best for your situation.
